apologise TO someone (for …)

Pranee apologised to her teacher for coming to school late.
ปราณีขอโทษครูของเธอที่มาโรงเรียนสาย
(เราใช้ apologised to her teacher ไม่ใช่ apologised her teacher)

หมายเหตุ : เพื่อนๆ คงเคยเห็น apologize (สะกดด้วย z) บ่อยๆ ใช่ไหมคะแบบนี้จะเป็นการเขียนแบบอเมริกันนะคะ ส่วน apologise (สะกดด้วย s) เป็นแบบอังกฤษค่ะ และมีอีกคำคือคำว่า sorry ก็ใช้กล่าวขอโทษได้เช่นกันแต่ว่า sorry จะเป็น adjective จึงต้องใช้กับ verb to be ด้วยอย่างเช่น I’m sorry. We’re sorry. I’m sorry for having kept you waiting. เป็นต้นค่ะ

explain/describe (to someone) what/how/why …

Can you explain to me how this machine works?

(เราอาจจะพูดสั้นๆว่า Can you explain how this machine works? ก็ได้

ข้อควรจำ เราไม่ใช้ TO กับ verbs ต่อไปนี้

phone/call/email/text someone

He hasn’t called or texted me to cancel the meeting.
เขาไม่ได้โทรหรือส่งข้อความให้ฉันเพื่อยกเลิกนัดหมาย
(เราพูดว่า write (a letter) to someone แต่ไม่พูดว่า call to someone หรือ text to someone)

Text me when you get there.

answer someone/something

He refused to answer my question.
เขาปฏิเสธที่จะตอบคำถามของฉัน
(เราใช้ reply to an email หรือ reply to a letter etc. แต่เราไม่ใช้ answer to …)

ask someone

Can I ask you a question?
ฉันขอถามอะไรคุณหน่อยได้ไหม?
(เราไม่ใช้ ask to you)

thank someone (for something)

He thanked me for helping him.
เขาขอบคุณฉันที่ช่วยเขา
(ไม่ใช่ He thanked to me …)

verb + at

look/stare/glance AT .. . , have a Look AT / take a Look AT …

Why are you looking at me like that ?
ทำไมคุณมองฉันแบบนั้น?

He took a glance at the girl.
เขาชายตามองไปที่หญิงสาว

laugh AT …

You should not laugh at his mistake.
คุณไม่ควรหัวเราะในความผิดพลาดของเขา

If you do such a foolish thing, people will laugh at you.
