การใช้ by the time เราใช้เชื่อมประโยคโดยมีความหมายว่า เมือถึงเวลานั้น/ในเวลานั้น เช่น By the time she arrived, we had left. (ในเวลาที่เธอมาถึง พวกเราก็ไปแล้ว) ในตอนที่แล้วเราพูดถึงการใช้ by กับเวลา ซึ่งแปลว่า ไม่เกินกว่า/ไม่ช้ากว่า(not later than) กันไปแล้ว สำหรับตอนนี้เราจะพูดถึงการใช้ by the time เชื่อมประโยคกันต่อนะคะ

เราใช้ by the time something happens (for the fact/present) ตัวอย่างประโยคเช่น

By the time you receive this postcard, I’ll be back home.
ตอนที่คุณได้รับโปสการ์ดนี้ ผมคงจะกลับบ้านแล้ว

Hurry up! By the time we get to the cinema, the film will already have started.
เร็วเข้า! เดี๋ยวพอเราไปถึงโรงหนัง หนังก็จะเริ่มฉายไปแล้วพอดี

เราใช้ by the time something happened (for the past) ตัวอย่างประโยคเช่น

By the time Tanggwa arrived, most of us had left.
ในตอนที่แตงกวามาถึงพวกเราก็กลับกันเกือบหมดแล้ว

By the time I got to the station, my train had already left.
ในตอนที่ฉันไปถึงสถานี รถไฟก็ได้ออกไปแล้ว

เรายังสามารถใช้ by then หรือ by that time โดยมีความหมายเหมือนกันได้ด้วย ตัวอย่างประโยคเช่น

Tanggwa arrived at midnight, but by then, most of us had left.
Tanggwa arrived at midnight, but by that time, most of us had left.
แตงกวามาถึงตอนเที่ยงคืน แต่ตอนนั้นพวกเราก็กลับกันเกือบหมดแล้ว
