การใช้ to be used to / get used to (something, doing something) เราใช้ในความหมายว่าเคยชินกับบางสิ่งบางอย่าง หรือ การกระทำบางอย่าง หลัง to be used to / get used to เราจะไม่ใช้รูป infinitive แต่ใช้ gerund (-ing) อย่าสับสนระหว่าง I am used to doing (แปลว่า ฉันชินกับการทำ) กับ I used to do (แปลว่าฉันเคยทำ) ต่างกันทั้งโครงสร้างและความหมายเลยนะคะ เรามาดูรายละเอียดในเรื่องนี้พร้อมกับดูตัวอย่างประโยคการใช้ to be used to / get used to (something, doing something) ไปพร้อมๆ กันเลยค่ะ
เพื่อให้เข้าใจง่ายๆ เรามาดูสถานการณ์ที่ปราณีต้องไปอาศัยอยู่ในประเทศลาว ซึ่งที่นั่นเค้าขับรถทางด้านขวาต่างจากพวกเราในไทยที่ขับรถทางด้านซ้าย แล้วปราณีจะเป็นอย่างไรบ้างเราไปดูกันเลยค่ะ
Pranee is Thai, but she lives in Lao. When she first drove a car in Lao, she found it very difficult because she had to drive on the right, not on the left. Driving on the right was strange and difficult for he because:
She wasn’t used to it.
เธอไม่เคยชินกับมัน
She wasn’t used to driving on the right.
เธอไม่ชินกับการขับรถทางขวา
But after a lot of practice, driving on the right became less strange. So:
She got used to driving on the right.
เธอเริ่มชินกับการขับรถทางขวา
Now it’s no problem for Pranee:
She is used to driving on the right.
ตอนนี้เธอชินกับการขับรถทางขวาแล้ว
Pranee bought a new house. It is on a very busy street. She expect she will get used to the noise, but at the moment it’s very disturbing.
ปราณีคาดหวังว่าเธอจะชินกับเสียงรบกวนเหล่านั้น
Pranee has a new job. She has to get up much earlier now than before – at 6.00. She finds this difficult because she isn’t used to getting up so early.

หลังจากได้ดูตัวอย่างประโยคจากสถานการณ์ที่ปราณีได้เจอนี้แล้ว เพื่อนๆ คงเข้าใจลักษณะการใช้ to be used to / get used to (something, doing something) กันแล้วใช่ไหมคะว่า:
- เราใช้ to be used to something, doing something และ get used to something, doing something ในความหมายว่า เคยชินกับบางสิ่งบางอย่าง หรือ การกระทำบางอย่าง
- หลัง to be used to / get used to เราจะไม่ใช้รูป infinitive แต่ใช้ gerund (-ing)
เราใช้รูปประโยค She got used to driving on the right.
ไม่ใช่She got used to drive on the right.
เราใช้รูปประโยค She is used to driving on the right.
ไม่ใช่She is used to drive on the right.

I used to do somthing. ใช้ในความหมายว่าฉันเคยทำอะไรบางอย่าง (ทำต่อเนื่องในอดีตแต่ในปัจจุบันไม่ทำแล้ว)
*** เราใช้ I used to do something. ไม่ใช่ I am used to do something.

Tanggwa used to have very long hair when she was a child.

We used to live in a small village, but now we live in Bangkok.
